 처음 읽는 작가 레이첼 커스크의 소설 <<Outline>>.

 

1소설의 첫 문단 일부 

 

Before the flight I was invited for lunch at a London club with a billionaire I’d been promised had liberal credentials. He talked in his open-necked shirt about the new software he was developing, that could help organisations identify the employees most likely to rob and betray them in the future. 

 

비행기를 타기 전 런던의 한 클럽에서 백만장자와 점심을 먹었다. 소개한 사람이 장담한 바에 따르면, 자유주의적인 신념을 지닌 인물이라고 했다. 노타이셔츠 차림의 백만장자는 자신이 개발 중인 새로운 소프트웨어에 대해서 이야기했다. 회사가 종업원들을 갈취하고, 나중에 버리는 일에 도움이 되는 소프트웨어였다. (<<윤곽>> 김현우 역, 한길사)

 

“liberal credentials”를 지닌 백만장자가 “organisations identify the employees most likely to rob and betray them in the future” 나중에 회사/기업 돈을 횡령하고 배반할 직원을 (말하자면 미리) “identify”  알아내는 소프트웨어를 새로 개발 중이라는 내용.

문장과 동사의 주어와 목적어를 헷갈렸다. 

 

2. 

On the tarmac at Heathrow the planeful of people waited silently to be taken into the air. The air hostess stood in the aisle and mimed with her props as the recording played.

 

히드로 공항의 활주로에서 비행기를 가득 채운 승객들은 말없이 이륙을 기다리고 있었다. 승무원들이 구명장비를 들고 복도에 서서 녹음된 영상 같은 동작을 해 보였다.

 

승무원들이 미리 녹음된 내용에 따라 말없이 동작을 해 보이는 장면. “녹음된 영상 같은 동작”이 무엇인지…

 

3. 

 

She led us through the possibility of death and disaster, as the priest leads the congregation through the details of purgatory and hell; and no one jumped up to escape while there was still time. Instead we listened or half-listened, thinking about other things, as though some special hardness had been bestowed on us by this coupling of formality with doom.

교회의 목사님이 연옥과 지옥의 모습을 상세하게 안내하듯이, 승무원은 죽음과 재앙에 대해 안내해 주었다. 아직 시간이 있을 때 자리에서 일어나 탈출하려는 사람은 한 명도 없었다. 우리 승객들은 다른 일들을 생각하며 그 안내에 귀를, 아마도 반쯤만, 기울였다. 마치 형식을 따른다는 마음과 약간의 체념이 뒤섞이며 마음이 단단해진 것만 같았다.

 

승무원이 말없이 비상시 취해야 할 안전 조처를 보여주는 것이 “formality”이고, 이런 격식/공식/의례가, “possible” 일어날 수도 있는 (비행기 추락이라는) “doom”재앙과 함께/섞여서 승객들의 마음을 좀 단단하게?/모질게? 한 것 같다는 내용. “형식을 따른다는 마음과 약간의 체념이” 뒤섞인 것이 아님. 

 

4. 

The plane began to move, trundling forward so that the vista appeared to unfreeze into motion, flowing past the windows first slowly and then faster, until there was the feeling of effortful, half- hesitant lifting as it detached itself from the earth. There was a moment in which it seemed impossible that this could happen. But then it did.

 

비행기가 움직이기 시작했다. 바퀴가 구르자 정지해 있던 풍경이 움직이고, 창 밖의 정경은 점점 더 빠르게 스쳐 지나갔다. 마침내 비행기는 힘겹게, 반쯤은 망설이는 듯 땅에서 떨어졌다. 불가능할 거라고 생각했던 순간, 정말로 그런 일이 일어났다.

 

비행기가 이륙할 때 처음에는 비행기가 뜨는 것이 불가능한 것 같이 느껴지는 찰나 비행기가 뜨는 순간을 잘 나타낸 문장. “정말로 그런 일이 일어났다.”는 매우 어색하다.
